What is Expedited EIN, and who can add it?
Expedited EIN ($299, one-time) puts your EIN application on the expedited track. It's only for companies where no owner has a US SSN, and it's refunded automatically if anyone on the order turns out to have one.
Expedited EIN is an optional add-on. It puts your EIN (tax ID) application on the expedited track. It costs $299, one-time.
Who can add it
Expedited EIN is only for companies where no owner has a US SSN. An ITIN is fine. Checkout offers it only when you answer No, they don't have an SSN to "Does the main owner have a US Social Security number (SSN)?"
- On that step, select Add expedited EIN. Select Remove expedited EIN to take it out.
- At checkout, it also appears under Add to your order (optional).
- If you answer Yes, they have an SSN, it is removed from your order.
If it is in your order when it shouldn't be, checkout shows: "The expedited tax ID is for companies whose main owner has no SSN. Untick it to continue."
What it adds
You sign one more IRS form, Form 8821, from Home. It lets our formation partner talk to the IRS about your EIN application. See What is Form 8821, and when do I sign it?
When it's refunded automatically
- Someone on the order has an SSN. After checkout, if anyone on the order turns out to have a US SSN, your company qualifies for the standard route. Your order goes on that route and the add-on is refunded: "Your company qualifies for the standard tax-ID route, so we've refunded the expedited option."
- The expedited route couldn't issue your EIN. The add-on is refunded and your EIN continues on the standard route at no extra charge: "The expedited route couldn't issue your tax ID, so we've refunded that option."
The refund line appears under the Tax ID (EIN) track on Home once the refund is issued. You don't need to ask for it.
