What happens if the state rejects your company name
The state tries your three names in order. If it rejects all of them, Home asks you to choose new names, and we email you. Your new names then go to our formation partner.
On this page
The state tries your names in order and uses the first one that's available. If it turns down all of them, you choose new ones from Home.
Why the state turns a name down
The state turns a name down when it's too close to an existing company, uses a restricted word, or is missing its ending, such as LLC or Inc.
How to choose new names
- Open Home. Under Needs you, find New name choice — the state rejected the names given.
- Select Choose new names.
- Enter your First choice, and up to two alternatives.
- Pick the Ending.
- Submit the form.
You'll see "Thanks, your new names are with our formation partner." We also email the account owner "Choose new names for your company" when this is needed.
Costs
You agreed on the Review step that the formation charge still applies if all your names are rejected.
Other things the state can send back
The State filing track can also show Blocked if the state couldn't accept the registered agent's details, or sent the filing back as incomplete. Our team handles these and tells you if anything is needed from you.
